Topic:
It's already hard enough to recruit volunteers. To lose them prematurely and replace them adds unnecessary strain to an agency's bandwidth. This workshop will not provide you a simple list of how to keep volunteers. See Google for that. However, the workshop will dive deeper into the emotional, cognitive and behavioral processes involved before someone decides to disengage and stop volunteering.
We will look at the underlying reasons from an emotional intelligence lens. This will provide participants the tools and insights to not only detect early warning signs, but also to support them in continuing to be engaged when the going gets tough.
Participants will:
- Learn 5 steps of the Wheel of Burnout and how it applies to your agency, and volunteers
- Dive deeper into relational dynamics between staff and volunteers
- Focus on the importance of clear boundaries, confrontation and agreements and their effort on burnout
- Recognize the link between managing hot buttons and strong volunteer engagement
- Discover key elements of emotional intelligence from introspection to influence

Carlo Kriekels
Carlo was born in Belgium and is a first-generation American Citizen. He holds two degrees (a J.D. from Belgium and a LL.M from Germany) and is proficient in six languages, including Spanish. After completing an intensive four-year training program in emotional intelligence coaching, Carlo taught leadership and emotional intelligence skills to business leaders in Europe and in the United States for many years. In 2001, he co-founded the YESS Institute in order to bring the benefits of emotional intelligence training to at-risk youth and the nonprofit agencies that serve youth.
As the YESS Institute's co-founder and lead trainer, Carlo has trained over 4,000 youth and role models at national, regional, and local conferences and workshops. Since 2006, he has been an active member of the Youth Mentoring Collaborative's (YMC) training committee and co-chaired the YMC in 2009-2010.
Carlo was a key leader in the inception of the Statewide Mentoring Partnership. He has served on both The Denver Foundation's Inclusiveness Committee (2009-2015) and The Denver Foundation's Education Committee (2012-2014). He received the 2011 "Heavy Lifting Award" from the Denver Mayor's Office for Education and Children for his efforts to improve the lives of youth in Denver.
Carlo oversees overall agency operations and the development of the YESS curriculum.
Carlo lives in Denver with his wife, two sons and their Wheaton Terrior, Lilly. He enjoys cycling over and across Colorado's mountains in his free time.
